Text : You will not need the recommended lab text for this lab, just the class textbook. Pinet, Paul R., Invitation to Oceanography , Jones and Bartlett publishers, 3 rd edition, 2003.

A lab notebook for lab exercises will be required and can be purchased at the bookstore.

Grading:
Lab Reports (4, worth 25pts each) 100
Attendance (5 points per class) 75
Cruise 100
Student Presentations 75

Total 350

Attendance: Attendance is Mandatory in this lab. It will be recorded by you turning in a simple handout at the end of class. If you forget to turn it in, you will not be marked as present. You will not be able to make up the attendance points even if you have an excuse. You automatically get 5 points on the days that we don't have class and also spring break. There are 15 days total, so that is 75 pts just for being here and turning in a handout at the end of class!

Lab Reports: Lab reports will be due a week after the lab. They will be graded on grammar, format, technical content, and accuracy. The reports should be typed on a computer in double spaced easily readable font (i.e., Times New Roman) and you are required to turn in a copy to the instructor the week following the lab. You may choose to turn an electronic copy of your lab report, but it will be your responsibility for the lab report to be sent to the instructor by the end of your class period. Before electronically sending your lab reports, make sure that the lab report is compatible with the 2003 edition of Microsoft Word. Late problem sets will be accepted, but two points deducted from the final score for each day that the lab report is late. PLEASE HAND IN YOUR OWN WORK. In instances where different students hand in identical lab reports, this is considered cheating and all those lab reports will be given a zero.

Presentations : Small groups of students (2-3 people) will present the class with a short 10 minute power point presentations on a current topic related to marine science. The presentations should link previously learned material with new material found through resources (i.e., scientific journals, textbooks, scientific websites, etc.). The presentations can include pictures, but the use of sound effects is not permitted. It will be graded on grammar, format, technical content, and accuracy.

Lab Make-ups: If you have missed a lab in which you have to write a report, and have a doctor's excuse, show this to an instructor and we will try to arrange for you to make up the lab. You will still be required to do a lab report.

Extra Credit: There will be a few chances to get extra credit. The lab worksheets can be answered during class and turned in before class is over. You can get up to 3 bonus points each time for completing the worksheets correctly.

Cruise: The field trip is Mandatory . It is worth 100pts of your grade (25%). You will not be able to make up the points unless you have a doctor's excuse. The cruise will occur, rain or shine. You will receive more information on the cruise during the preparation lab for it.
