The new Oceanographic Support Facility (OSF), now under construction at SSC, is a critical facility needed for DMS personnel to fully participate in ocean observing activities that are expected to revolutionize oceanographic research as well as coastal management. Ocean observing is likely to become the weather service of the ocean and as such will involve the expenditure of billions of dollars in federal funding and require the education of hundreds of operational oceanographers. Construction of the OSF is therefore critical to DMS economic development, expanded research funding, and increased student numbers. The OSF will serve as a storage, servicing and staging facility for large-scale oceanographic instruments, equipment and vehicles.
In the fall of 2007, The University of Southern Mississippi began offering the only Bachelor of Science in Marine Science degree program in the state of Mississippi. This program educates students in the multidisciplinary field of marine science and provides a basic understanding of the underlying principles and processes of the oceans. At present, the program focuses on marine technology and ocean observing, which are broadly applicable across the various sub-disciplines of marine science. It is anticipated that the scope of the degree program will expand into other areas in the near future. See our Academic Programs for more information.
