ADVANCED BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY
3 credit hours
Course
Prerequisites: MAR
401/501 or consent of the instructor.
Course
Description: This
course will explore current concepts in biological oceanography
through a combination of lectures and discussions, relying on
past and current scientific literature as a source of information.
Interactions between biological processes and physical,
chemical and geochemical oceanography will be examined.
The course will begin with topics relating to characteristics
of individual organisms and the physical and chemical rules that
regulate their activity. Next, biological processes will be examined
on local scales (i.e., in the oceanic water column). On intermediate
or regional scales, we will focus on the biological oceanography
of coastal upwelling and river systems, and biology of major currents,
rings, gyres and eddies. Finally, on the global scale, the causes
and consequences of basin wide biological variation and the ocean's
role in world climatic changes will be examined.
