The idea of the conference materialized in May of 1998. The meeting was
conceived primarily as a local forum where researchers from the universities and
research centers from Mississippi, Louisiana and neighboring states would
present their work. It was also viewed as a gathering where scientists in all
areas of computation could develop links between its various threads in an
informal atmosphere. The conference was organized by

University
Four keynote addresses were delivered:
- S.S. Iyengar (Louisiana State University) Wavelet Based Techniques
for Image Processing Applications
- F. Petry (Tulane University) Uncertainty Issues in GIS and Spatial
Databases
- S. Piacsek (Naval Research Laboratory) Parallel Approaches to Navy
Ocean Modeling
- J. Zhu (Mississippi State University) An Efficient High Order
Algorithm for Solving Reaction-Diffusion Equations
and four Minisymposia took place:
- Spatial Data Computation organized by M. Cobb (The University
of Southern Mississippi)
- Computational Approaches to Predictions of Molecular Structures,
Properties and Reactions organized by J. Leszczynski (Jackson State
University)
- Random Number and Monte Carlo Research at USM organized by M.
Mascagni (The University of Southern Mississippi)
- Ocean Modeling and Related Applications organized by L.
Perkins (The University of Southern Mississippi)
Almost 100 participants took part in the conference representing The Czech
Republic, Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania and USA.
