The B.S. degree in Mathematics provides a solid background in critical and analytical thinking. It is foundational.

Our undergraduate program is designed to provide students options for further study in mathematics, and to provide flexible career options for further work in other disciplines.

Description of the undergraduate program

There are two undergraduate degree programs in mathematics. The MATHBS degree program is the non-teaching degree. It requires that you earn a minor. The MATHLBS degree program in lieu of a minor provides licensure to teach at the secondary level. For a description of the general requirements for both baccalaureate degrees, click on Requirements. If you wish to see a semester-by-semester sample program for each of the baccalaureate degrees , click on Semester by Semester Sample Programs. The remaining four links are to the individual B.S. degree programs in tabular form. Freshman students entering Southern Miss commencing fall 2003 must follow the "new" programs. Students who can graduate under the 2002-2003 or earlier Undergraduate Bulletin may follow the "old" programs.

Options for College Algebra, MAT 101

The Department of Mathematics offers students a choice of three course formats for College Algebra. Each course format will satisfy the university mathematics core requirement:

  1. Explorations in College Algebra (MAT 101E). Visit the Web page at http://www.usm.edu/math101e/ for a description of this course.
  2. College Algebra (MAT 101) taught as a lecture course. This is the traditional course. It is now usually taught in the large section format.
  3. College Algebra (MAT 101) taught as an online course. Visit the Web page at http://www.usm.edu/lec/onlineclasseval.php
and take the quiz there to see if online learning is for you.
