Undergraduate Research in Mathematics

Undergraduate Research Program , or URP, provides stimulating mathematical experiences for our best undergraduate scholars. Program participants work on mathematics problems under the direction of senior faculty. Participants have presented the results of their work to student and faculty groups throughout the Southeast, and several have won awards at the annual meetings of the Louisiana/Mississippi Section of the Mathematical Association of America. In addition, some of these students have published their work in the Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics and the Journal of Mathematics and Computer Education. It is not unusual for a URP participant to expand one of his or her projects into an undergraduate thesis.

Links to Faculty sponsoring URP projects: To find out more about current URP research, follow the links and contact the listed faculty directly:

  • Jiu Ding - Topics: Numerical Analysis, optimization, ergodic theory and dynamical systems.
Link: to UR page, Contact: Jiu.Ding@usm.edu.

  • Joseph Kolibal - Topics: Applied and computational mathematics, including partial differential equations, linear algebra, approximation and interpolation.
Link: to UR page, Contact: Joseph.Kolibal@usm.edu.

  • Sungwook Lee - Topics: Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, Symplectic Geometry, Noncommutative Geometry.
