The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Southern Mississippi offers a program leading to the Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages (MATL) with an emphasis in French. The focus of the MATL is on developing and enhancing the knowledge and skills in language, language acquisition, and language instruction that are essential for both effective teaching and successful learning. The MATL is offered year-round, with the option of completing the program through Summer Only registration. The core requirements for the MATL and courses for the Spanish emphasis may be completed at the USM campus in Hattiesburg year-round, through online courses, and/or in Mexico during the summer.AA Licensure in Mississippi for French and Spanish emphases (for those holding a current Mississippi teaching license). AA licensure in French or Spanish requires a minimum of fifteen (15) hours of graduate level coursework in the language, as included in the MATL program of study. However, students should check with their respective state departments of education (including the Mississippi SDE) to determine specific requirements (e.g., NCATE approval is not always necessary).
Spanish Emphasis Requirements
A minimum of 15 graduate hours in Spanish. A Spanish language proficiency requirement as determined by Departmental policy. Spanish Emphasis coursework may be completed at the USM campus in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, year-round and through summer-only enrollment, or in Puebla, Mexico, and Madrid, Spain (when available), during summers.
Teaching at the Postsecondary Level
To meet SACS requirements to teach at the postsecondary level, a total of eighteen (18) hours (an additional three hours) of graduate level coursework in the language may be required.
