The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Southern Mississippi offers a program leading to the Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages (MATL) with an emphasis in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The focus of the MATL is on developing and enhancing the knowledge and skills in language, language acquisition, and language instruction that are essential for both effective teaching and successful learning. The MATL is offered year-round, with the option of completing the program through Summer Only registration. The core requirements for the MATL may be completed at the USM campus in Hattiesburg and/or in Mexico or Spain. The TESOL emphasis course work may only be completed at the USM campus in Hattiesburg or through online courses.

Special Note about the TESOL Emphasis Area
Students in TESOL whose first language is English must meet a foreign language requirement by completing nine (9) hours of conversational foreign language study (through the equivalent of a USM 201 course) or equivalent with an average of "B" or better. TESOLers who have had such language study within six years of commencing MATL work are considered to have met the requirement. Significant living experience in another country may meet the requirement. Check with an adviser about the language requirement.
TESOLers without a background in a foreign language may take the needed language courses at any accredited university or college in the United States or at a recognized language institute in another country. A transcript or other formal documentation of study needs to be sent to the MATL coordinator.
The ESL endorsement to a current Mississippi teaching license requires the completion of FL, 561, FL 663, FL 664, and either CIE/S 600 or FL 665. Teachers from other states need to check with their respective state departments of education as to the requirements for an ESL endorsement.
