MATL Summer Hybrid Courses

The MATL is pleased to offer two innovatively delivered courses in Summer 2008. FL561 - Teaching Second Languages and FL665 - Sociocultural and Sociolinguistic Perspectives in Language will be offered in a hybrid format that will blend online delivery with onsite classrooms.

The hybrid delivery allows you more flexibility in your enrollment in graduate courses offered through the MATL this summer.

FL561 and FL665 will have a required three-part participation schedule as follows:

  • May 27 - June 15: An online component with discussion boards and assignments due through Blackboard CE6, the university's online course delivery program. Some assignments may be accessible as early as April 15 for those that want to get a headstart on their work. The work for this part of the course(s) does not require your presence at a MATL summer site. All students who have not taken a course in CE6 before should do the precourse familiarization assignments to be posted here .
  • June 16 - June 20: Students participate in the onsite component of the course(s). You will have the choice of doing this component at the USM campus in Hattiesburg or at the MATL summer site at the University of the Americas (UDLA) in Puebla, Mexico. The plan is for the courses to be taught from Hattiesburg with a live, interactive video connection to UDLA. Dr. Miles and Dr. Burnett will teach from Hattiesburg, while a USM faculty member will participate in both courses at UDLA.
    • Late arrivals to or early departures from onsite components of these courses are not permitted.
  • After June 20 : A follow-up online component of each course, with ongoing participation on the discussion boards and additional assignments and projects to be submitted electronically. These assignments may require using a research library. The work for this component of the course does not require your presence at a MATL summer site.

Specific course information (e.g., pre-course assignments, course descriptions, textbooks) will be available at a later time through the site course offerings page.

Contact the site coordinators or Dr. Joanne Burnett, the general coordinator, for further information.
