MATL Summer Programs

The MATL can be completed in a single calendar year with full-time enrollment. We also provide the opportunity to complete the MATL program through summer-only enrollment over the course of as few as two summers with full enrollment, and provided that six hours of transfer, study abroad, or distance learning credit can be obtained. In addition to study abroad opportunities, two aspects of the program which permit flexible enrollment are the Practicum (FL 694), in which teachers use their own classroom for the analysis of teaching and learning, and several types of directed individual study and online courses. Up to six hours of acceptable graduate credit can be transferred into the program from other accredited universities.

How much does the MATL Cost?

Check out the "Cost" page.

The MATL is a program which has proved popular with graduate students and teachers from throughout the country and other nations, because of the specifically teacher-oriented content of the program, the emphasis on communicative proficiency in the target languages, and because it can be completed in an economical and relatively short period of time. Your ability to complete the program in two summers will depend on several factors:

i. Our summer courses are usually taught in two consecutive terms, and graduate students typically take six (6) semester hours in each session, for a total of twelve (12) hours over the span of the summer. Because some teachers do not finish their academic year until mid- or late June, we do usually offer an accelerated course during the last two weeks of the first summer term, which enables some late arrivals to complete nine (9) hours by the end of the summer. In the summer program for 2005, we introduced two 'hybrid' courses that can be completetd partially online and partially on-site in either Hattiesburg or Puebla. See here for more information. To complete the entire degree program, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Mexico, or Spain (when available), within the two-summer period, you need to pursue twelve (12) semester credit hours per summer and either take an adequate number of online course or transfer in approved course work.

ii. We offer you the opportunity to transfer in six (6) hours of appropriate graduate work. Fifteen (15) hours of your coursework will be in specific MATL core courses, fifteen (15) hours will be in your emphasis area (Spanish, TESOL, or French), and the remaining three (3) hours can be in the emphasis or in a related field. We will be offering an increasing number of a distance-learning courses, including both core and emphasis area coruses, in the Fall and Spring semesters. Another avenue to be considered is study abroad, which we strongly encourage because it will help improve your language proficiency and increase awareness of cultural differences and diversity. You may wish to consider participating in our Spanish in Spain Program or Spanish in Mexico Program or inquire about possibilities of special field research courses that can incorporate study in an approved language institute abroad.

iii. Three (3) hours of the MATL core requirements will come from the Practicum (FL694), which may be completed in your own classroom during the course of the regular academic year.
