Notes for Summer MATLers
Summer Enrollment only Completing the degree through summer-only enrollment requires at least two summers of full-time study (4 courses for 12 hours), completion of the practicum during the school year between the summers, and the obtaining of six additional hours. These hours can be obtained through transfer work, Study projects completed abroad, or distance learning courses offered by USM or through a combination of these options. Each is described in more detail below. Another option is to finish the program in more than two summers. University policies require the completion of a masters degree in no more than six years. Summer course offerings are organized to present the greatest flexibility for summer-only students. Most courses are offered on a 4- or 4.5-week basis depending on the site, and we also offer intensive courses and/or hybrid courses that permit students to maximize their time available for summer studies. Summer offerings are posted on the MATL website as early as possible during the academic year. Attendance Policy While each professor within the MATL has the right to set an individual attendance policy for the courses that s/he teaches, MATL summer students should realize that absences from summer classes can have a severe impact on successful completion of a course. Students who miss what their professor considers an inordinate number of classes in the summer may receive a lowered grade or not pass the course. How much does it cost? |

Notes about MATL Offerings in Mexico
Currently it is possible to complete the MATL-Spanish Emphasis during the summers at the Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico. Since core classes are also offered in Puebla, students in other emphasis areas could also take those courses at these sites. However, not all core courses may be available in a given summer session. You are encouraged to check the course offerings page early for the availability of courses in Mexico. The Department of Foreign Languages does reserve the right to change the formats of the MATL Program in Mexico and Spain. Only those students who have a documented proficiency in Spanish equivalent to the admission requirements for the Spanish Emphasis may take Spanish courses at these sites.

Overloads
Twelve (12) hours is the maximum course load for summer enrollment. Late Arrivals Because of the compressed session format of MATL offerings in the summer, late arrivals (after the first day of class) are not permitted. Students in Mexico who cannot start the courses on the first day can consider alternative course work that may involve study at an intensive Spanish language institute. Registration and Arrival Information posted HERE.
