INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this information packet is to provide you with
those specific details that affect your program of studies with
the Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages Program. We encourage
you to read these pages carefully and to ask an adviser if you
have any questions. There are no bad questions - except the ones
you don't ask. We also encourage you to direct your questions
to those individuals with responsibilities
in the MATL so that you can receive the most accurate information.
THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSPPI
The University of Southern Mississippi
is a comprehensive institution of higher learning accredited by
the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools (SACS) to award bachelor's, master's and doctoral
degrees. The University of Southern Mississippi, with its strong
commitment to study abroad, has been placed in the top ten universities
in this area of international education.
THE MASTER OF ARTS IN THE TEACHING OF LANGUAGES
(MATL)
The MATL program at The University
of Southern Mississippi, with extensions in Mexico
and Spain brings together foreign language
teachers and teachers-to-be from all parts of the Unites States
and from a number of other countries as well.
The MATL is a unique program of professional preparation specifically
designed to meet the needs of teachers from elementary and secondary
education through the junior and community college levels. The
MATL is not a literature degree; instead our purpose is to provide
you with courses that meet your needs as a foreign language teacher.
Designed to integrate theory and application, the MATL program
focuses on the enhancement of language teaching skills and knowledge
about language and language learning. Therefore, your coursework
will focus on improving your knowledge of the language you teach
and improving your ability to convey that knowledge to your students.
Your courses will address, both directly and indirectly such concerns
as:
- enhancing knowledge about language and culture
- managing the classroom in the target language
- increasing your confidence and fluency in the target language
- creating and adapting teaching materials and activities.
- teaching "tough" topics in the language classroom.
- sharing ideas with teachers and teachers-to-be from all over
the world.
