Application for Degree and Audit

At least one semester prior to your completion of the MATL, you are required to submit a signed and completed Application for Degree. Applications for degrees are available from the Office of Graduate Studies (http://www.usm.edu/graduatestudies/app_degree.php) and come as a MSWord or pdf download.

The due date to file application for degree for a August 2006 graduation is April 7. The deadline for a Fall 2006 graduation is July 7, and the deadline for a Spring 2007 graduation is November 3.

The following should be submitted for the application for a degree:

  • The application for a degree (see above)
  • An up-to-date Plan of Study (Scroll down under Masters Programs to "Teaching of Languages" and choose your emphasis area. If you are completing two emphasis areas, fill out one of the forms only and add the other emphasis in the appropriate slot).
  • A completed Survey of Graduate Degree Recipients (see degree application webpage)
  • A Degree Progress Report (see degree application webpage)
  • A check made out to USM for $50

If you are off campus, please sign and return your forms and the $50 application fee (check made out to “USM”) to the MATL coordinator by mail (Office of Graduate Studies requires an original - not faxed - copy be on file). We will take care of getting the necessary signatures, submitting the fee to the Business Office, and delivering the applications to the Graduate School. Those of you on campus can leave your forms with their advisors.

If mailing, send to: MATL Coordinator, Dept of Foreign Languages, The University of Southern Mississippi, 118 College Drive #5038, Hattiesburg, MS 39406-0001

A new policy of the USM Office of Graduate Studies is to charge $50 each time a student needs to postpone his/her graduation. In other words, if you apply to graduate in the spring, but then postpone your graduation until summer, expect to see that $50 charge on your account.

During the semester in which you intend to graduate, the graduate school degree auditor will send you an audit letter indicating any gaps in your program of studies based on a review of whether your transcript matches the courses listed on your degree application. For the many instances where there is a discrepancy between the transcript and the degree application, your adviser can send a memo approving any changes to your degree application.
