Eligibility
Only institutions of higher education and cominations of
institutions of higher education are eligible to apply for McNair
awards. If you have further questions about eligibility, please

U.S. Department of Education regulations specify that students
who qualify for the McNair Scholars Program must be enrolled in a
degree-granting program at an eligible institution. In all
projects, at least two-thirds of the participants must be low-income
and first-generation college students. The remaining participants
may be from groups that are underrepresented in graduate
education. The University of Southern Mississippi McNair Scholars
Program additionally specifies that participants must:
- come from a low-income family and be a first-generation
college student OR be a
from a group underrepresented in graduate education
- be a citizen of the United States of America
- be committed to pursuing and completing a PhD
- participants are expected to stay in the program until graduation
