Eligibility

Only institutions of higher education and cominations of institutions of higher education are eligible to apply for McNair awards.  If you have further questions about eligibility, please contact OPE_TRIO@ed.gov.

U.S. Department of Education regulations specify that students who qualify for the McNair Scholars Program must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at an eligible institution.  In all projects, at least two-thirds of the participants must be low-income and first-generation college students.  The remaining participants may be from groups that are underrepresented in graduate education.  The University of Southern Mississippi McNair Scholars Program additionally specifies that participants must:

  • come from a low-income family and be a first-generation college student OR be a from a group underrepresented in graduate education
  • be a citizen of the United States of America
  • be committed to pursuing and completing a PhD
  • participants are expected to stay in the program until graduation
Recruiting takes place in March and April each year with a new class of Scholars beginnning each October.
