This Center focuses on interdisciplinary research on thin polymeric films and organic
coatings. Research, with strong international and industrial collaborations, addresses
fundamental aspects of "smart" coatings that will be critical to many disciplines. The
scientific objectives of the Center are the development of synthetic routes leading to
new macromolecules with stimuli-responsive characteristics, development of environmental
stimuli functions mimicking biological systems, development of techniques for predicting
environmental responses, and understanding formation processes in thin and thick
polymeric films at molecular levels. The Center supports high school and undergraduate
summer research educational activities with the emphasis on hands-on experience as well
as distance learning with web-based tutorials and new laboratory courses. An industrial
component also plays an important role. Numerous projects conducted within the Center
have strong industrial relevance.
