Travel Arrangements

Arrangements to arrive at The University of Southern Mississippi need to be made as soon as possible. If you are flying, you will needed to arrive on Monday, May 26th and your destination city needs to be the Gulfport/Biloxi airport (GPT). We will have a shuttle there to pick everyone up at 5:45pm. Make sure your flight will arrive before the shuttle. Your return flight needs to be scheduled for Friday, August 1st after 1:00pm. The shuttle will leave Hattiesburg at 10:00am to return everyone to the Gulfport/Biloxi airport. You will need to make your own travel arrangements. We will reimburse you half of your flight up to a maximum of $200. After your flight arrangements have been made, please e-mail me or fax me your flight itinerary. If you are planning to drive your car to Hattiesburg, MS, you will need to be on campus Monday, May 26th. You can check in to your residence hall ((McCarty Hall http://www.usm.edu/reslife/halls/mccartymale.html) when you arrive. You will be provided your room key when you check in. Please keep track of your gas receipts and/or hotel receipts. We will reimburse you half of your travel expenses up to a maximum of $200.

Holiday

The University will be closed Friday, July 4, 2008 in observance of the Fourth of July Holiday. You will have that Friday off and we encourage you to stay in Hattiesburg and participate in some of the local celebrations.

Clothing

You will need comfortable clothing for the summer. Pack at least one nice outfit for your final presentation and other events. You will also need to bring long sleeve shirts, long pants, and closed toe shoes for field trips. Just remember it does rain a lot in South Mississippi, so bring your rain coat and umbrella.

Weather

Southern Mississippi is known for its hot, humid and rainy summers. The average HIGH for June, July, and August is 91 and the LOW is 70. The average rainfall is 5.0 inches.

Accessories

If you already have a laptop or calculator, feel free to bring them. Our entire campus has wireless networking capabilities. You will need goggles and a lab coat for the summer. You may bring your own or you can purchase them from our bookstore when you arrive.

PLEASE FILL OUT THE ONLINE PERSONAL INFORMATION FORM by Wednesday, April 30th!! This will provide us information so we can pair you with a roommate.

You will soon be receiving additional details concerning maps to campus, your roommate, and most importantly the professor and research group you will be working with for the summer.
