Science Courses for Integration and Enhancing New Curriculum in Education (S.C.I.E.N.C.E.) For the last two years we have hosted area high school students as part of the Science Courses for Integration and Enhancing New Curriculum in Education (S.C.I.E.N.C.E.) , a program to encourage careers in science through relating science to everyday life and hands-on scientific discovery. This program was established by a supplement to the NSF program Partnership for Innovation (PFI) and was directed by Dr. Dana Thames, Chair and Professor of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education. MRSEC faculty Dr. Sabine Heinhorst and Dr. Sarah Morgan led the laboratory portion of the program. This program attracts over twenty high school students and five high school teachers from area schools to participate in the six week program. Mornings are spent in vocabulary and readings relating science to every day life. In the afternoon students and teachers conduct laboratory experiments, ranging from recycling of plastics to isolation of DNA, conducted by university graduate and undergraduate students from Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Polymer Science Departments. Students participated in field trips to local scientific and technical companies such as Southern Diversified Products and Leaf Rive Cellulose Pulp Mill, and spent one day in the Polymer Science Coatings Laboratory learning coatings formulation and testing techniques, participating in experiments and demonstrations, touring the facilities, and speaking with university graduate and undergraduate students. The program culminated with a Science Career Fair, attended by parents, university faculty, and local community and industry leaders. CLICK HERE TO VIEW PICTURES FROM 2005 SUMMER PROGRAM!
