Services

Mississippi Deaf-Blind Registry
The project maintains a federal registry of all children who have or are suspected of having both vision and hearing loss. Children must be placed on the registry to qualify for the technical assistance and training services. There is no cost for services.

Resource Library
The project has a resource library with materials on a range of topics that are available to families, services providers, and the community. Materials include toys and adaptive equipment for the child at home or school, and informational newsletter on related topics.

Technical Assistance and Training
Project staff provide technical assistance and training based on individual needs and requests from families and service providers in the following areas:

Impact of Legislation and Policies

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Etiologies of Deaf-Blindness

  • Syndromes
  • Other Conditions

Implications or Learning

  • Understanding vision loss
  • Understanding hearing loss
  • Purposeful movement
  • Socialization and behavior

Family/Parent Involvement

  • Person-centered planning
  • Identification of critical skills within family routines

Communication

  • Determining expressive communication methods
  • Determining receptive communication methods
  • Considering the use of augmentative devices/communication systems

Least Restrictive Environment

  • Implementing best practices for inclusion
  • Facilitating interaction among all students

Transition

  • From early intervention to school services
  • From one program to another
  • From school to community services

Instructional Strategies

  • Implementing functional activities within the school
  • Developing total task activities/practices
  • Facilitating community-based instruction
  • Developing community-based work activities

Multidisciplinary Approaches

  • Defines roles and responsibilities
  • Consultation in writing/implementing the following:
    • Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP)
    • Individual Education Plan (IEP)
    • Individual Transition Plan (ITP)
  • Utilizing assessment information for programming
  • Evaluating student progress
