"Listening to our past to build our future"

Mississippians are famous for their stories. The Mississippi Oral History Project is a statewide initiative to record Mississippians talking about their experiences - family life, work, politics, churches, community, the daily grind, and extraordinary events - in their own words and styles. 

Each community's story casts one thread in the weave of Mississippi history. By sharing these stories told by people from all walks of life, we create a collective memory of life in 20th-century Mississippi and build a foundation for our common future.
