About the Violin Studio
Welcome to the homepage of the University of Southern Mississippi’s Violin Studio! It is an exciting time to be a violinist at USM, and we are thrilled that you are interested in joining us!
On this page, you will find information about the violin program at USM; if you have further questions, however, feel free to contact Dr. Shannon Thomas, Visiting Assistant Professor of Violin at shannon.n.thomas@usm.edu or 601.266.6943.
As a violinist at USM, you will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities within a supportive, yet challenging environment:
- Weekly, individual lessons
Lessons provide personalized training, focusing on your development as a violinist and musician. As a teacher, I strive to foster an environment that champions curiosity and enthusiasm; within these weekly lessons, we will delve into technical foundations, sound production, intonation, and musical phrasing. Discoveries never cease!
- Technique class
Each week, the violin studio gets together to work on scales, arpeggios, double stops, and etudes. It always helps to hear what peers are working on, how they approach the same difficulties, and see their growth as musicians in addition to yours.
- Violin Performance class
- Chamber music
- The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra
- Master classes given by visiting, world-renowned musicians
