Choirs at Southern Miss
THE SOUTHERN CHORALE is the premiere touring vocal ensemble of the University. It features a large percentage of junior, senior and graduate student music majors and several outstanding singers from other campus disciplines. The Chorale performs the complete spectrum of significant choral literature for a cappella and accompanied chorus. Soloists are drawn from within the Chorale. Regular tour itineraries are regional, national and international. Rehearsals are held four times a week.
THE CONCERT CHOIR and UNIVERSITY SINGERS performs diverse repertoire from all periods of history, including the fine art, popular, and folk traditions. The Concert Choir often combines equal numbers of music majors, music minors and students from other disciplines. Students in this ensemble make a serious commitment to high-level performance with a moderate rehearsal and performance schedule. The Concert Choir rehearses three times a week.
THE HATTIESBURG CHORAL UNION (formerly the Symphony Chorus) performs choral-orchestral masterworks from the High Baroque to newly-composed, commissioned works. Performances with the highly acclaimed USM Symphony Orchestra and with professional orchestras occur two or three times annually. The Union rehearses once weekly.
THE SOUTHERN CHAMBER SINGERS provides an opportunity for students to experience choral and vocal music in a chamber setting. The repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to vocal jazz arrangements. Rehearsals are three times a week.
The VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE is new to Southern Miss. The group rehearses twice a week and works with the Jazz Studies program. It makes numerous appearances throughout Hattiesburg and the Southern Miss campus.
The GULF COAST CIVIC CHORALE has completed a decade of choral excellence at our Gulf Coast campus in Long Beach. The group invites community members and Southern Miss students to participate in Tuesday evening rehearsals at Hardy Hall. The Civic Chorale gives several performances each semester.

VOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS
All vocal scholarships (service awards) at Southern Miss are awarded for participation in two ensembles. Students are required to be in one of the three daily ensembles (the Southern Chorale, the Concert Choir, or the University Singers), and all must participate in the Hattiesburg Choral Union.
Scholarships are granted on the basis of the student's musical ability and potential, teacher recommendation, desire and attitude, and the needs of the student.
Awards generally range from $200 to $2000 annually, renewable for four years, with the higher awards offered to truly exceptional students majoring in music. Out-of-state tuition scholarships for over $4000 each year are also available. Awards are made to students of all majors.
The University of Southern Mississippi provides additional financial assistance to academically talented students. Students with special financial needs should call the university's Financial Aid Office immediately at 601.266.4774.
For best advantage, apply as early as possible as the priority deadline for financial aid is March 15.
