Performance Opportunities

One of the most important days on the studio calendar is the Southern Miss Clarinet Day. Taking place in February each year, Clarinet Day features nationally and internationally recognized guest soloists, pedagogues and chamber groups as well as noted professionals from orchestras and universities in the region. Studio members as well as visiting high school and college students are privileged to hear these artists in concert, and many are invited to play for them in public masterclasses. Photos soon!

The studio hosts additional guests throughout the year, and student masterclasses are often featured. Among others, USM has welcomed clarinetists Michael Norsworthy(Boston Conservatory), Kimberly Cole(University of North Texas), Julia Heinen(California State University), Elsa Verdehr(Michigan State University), and ensembles such as the Imani Winds, the Dorian Wind Quintet, and the world renowned Verdehr Trio. USM will soon host acclaimed soloist Sean Osborn the very fine Solaris quintet.

Students often receive invitations to perform in masterclasses at other regional universities. They are encouraged to enter School of Music solo competitions and perform in chamber ensembles. The Southern Miss Clarinet choir rehearses each week and performs at Clarinet Day, in dedicated concerts, and in the annual School of Music Prism Concert.
