Southern Arts Brass Quintet
Dr. Bruce Tychinski, originally from Altoona, PA, is Assistant Professor of Trombone at The University of Southern Mississippi. At Southern Miss, Dr. Tychinski teaches applied lessons on trombone, courses in trombone literature and pedagogy, and conducts the trombone choir.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tychinski has performed and recorded with many orchestras, chamber groups, and jazz ensembles. Currently Dr. Tychinski is Principal Trombonist of the Gulf Coast Symphony (Biloxi, MS), a member of the Southern Arts Brass Quintet, comprised of the Southern Miss brass faculty, and the Nittany Trombone Quartet. He has also performed with the Mississippi Symphony (MS), Mobile Symphony (AL), Meridian Symphony (MS), Sinfonia Gulf Coast (FL), Green Bay Symphony (WI), Pamiro Opera (WI), Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony (IA), Eugene Opera (OR), American Wind Symphony Orchestra (PA), Cedar Rapids Symphony (IA), Altoona Symphony (PA), Music at Penn's Woods Festival Orchestra (PA), and the Harrisburg Symphony (PA). Dr. Tychinski has recorded compact discs with the Skyline Brass Quintet, American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Boulevard Big Band (Kansas City), Big Band Reunion (WI), the University of Kansas Symphonic Band, and the Penn State Alumni Trombone Choir.
Dr. Tychinski has performed as a soloist throughout the United States and internationally. He was the
featured soloist with the University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble at the 2007 All-South Band
Festival, performing Paul Creston's Fantasy for Trombone. He also has appeared as a soloist with the
Southern Miss Jazz Lab I and Southern Miss Trombone Choir. He has toured Europe three times as a
soloist and conductor with groups from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He also participated in a cultural
outreach program in Trujillo, Peru that included a master class presentation at the Instituto Nacional de
Cultura and performed with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Trujillo in August, 2000. In recent years, Dr.
Tychinski has performed solo recitals or concertos with high school and college bands at universities in Mississippi, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, California, Minnesota, Virginia, and Texas.
Additionally, he has premiered several works including Sonata in d in September 2003, written
especially for him by composer Bernard Sanders and two works, Celebration and El Fiesta, by Matt Neff, written for the Nittany Trombone Quartet. Dr. Tychinski has also performed at conferences of the
International Trombone Association, the Eastern Trombone Workshop, Music Teacher's National
Association, Wisconsin Music Educator's Association, Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association, Kansas Music Educator's Association. During his career he has performed for President Jimmy Carter twice, President George H. W. Bush, and for the Governors of all 50 states at the 2000 National Conference of Governors. In Spring 2007, Dr. Tychinski will perform at the Eastern Trombone Workshop as a soloist with the Penn State Trombone Choir and present several recitals on the east coast. He will also perform Paul Creston's Fantasy with the Southern Miss Wind Ensemble on February 10th during the All-South Honor Band Festival.
In May 2001, he completed his doctoral dissertation, "An Annotated Guide to Trombone Choir
Literature," which gives a brief synopsis of over 150 original works for trombone choir. Dr. Tychinski
has been the recipient of numerous grants for professional travel and special projects including a 2005-06 Technology Mentor Grant from The University of Southern Mississippi, a Summer Grant for a
recording project from St. Norbert College, and a joint Student-Faculty Project Grant from St. Norbert
College for the transcription of Bix Beiderbecke's Singin' the Blues and a performance using period
instruments. He has been published in the International Trombone Association Journal and presented a workshop for teachers at the 2002 Wisconsin Music Educator's Association Conference. Dr. Tychinski serves as the Brass Competition Coordinator for Mississippi Music Teacher's Association.
Dr. Tychinski holds Bachelor and Master of Music in Trombone Performance degrees from Penn State
University and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance degree from the University of
Kansas. Prior to his appointment at The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Tychinski taught low
brass and jazz studies at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin for five years. He has also taught at the University of Northern Iowa, Penn State University, and the University of Kansas.
