OBOE STUDIO
Welcome to the Oboe Studio at the University of Southern Mississippi! The students who make up the oboe studio are enthusiastic and dedicated to their pursuit of musical excellence. Students here work hard in an atmosphere of creating and achieving their individual goals, while supporting and encouraging each other. Alumni of the USM oboe studio have successfully auditioned for and continued their musical studies at esteemed schools of music and conservatories across the nation.
The School of Music at USM provides oboists with many opportunities to flourish into sophisticated players of the oboe and English horn. Opportunities for performing chamber music are available, and students can also audition to perform in the larger award-winning ensembles. Every year, students in the oboe studio have the opportunity to work with world-class guest artists in master classes. Weekly reed-making classes and studio classes also offer a framework for oboe students to further hone their skills.
For all levels of oboist, study with Dr. Pennington is focused around a firm grounding of the fundamentals of tone production, finger agility, and successful musical phrasing. These fundamentals are refined through the practice of long-tones, memorized scales, articulation exercises, Barret etudes, orchestral excerpts, solo repertoire, and reed-making. The future or current oboe student will find on these web pages more detailed information regarding audition requirements, courses of study, upcoming oboe-related events and concerts, and links to other sites pertaining to double reeds.
