Laboratory Techniques

Current techniques employed in the lab for testing, preserving, and fixating specimens and cultures.

Microtome-Cryostat
The cryostat is used mainly to transect excised specimens for verification of surgical placement. Temperature controlled, this unit has a cutting range below -30°C and a 24-hour defroster.

  Neurohistology
Various histological techniques include CREB expression and immunoblotting techniques such as western blot analysis and electrophoresis.

    SORVALL® Centrifuge
This unit separates various liquid-suspended materials with varying densities and particle sizes. Future applications include isolation of corticosterone in rats and cortisol and melatonin in humans.
      Stereotaxic Surgery
CNS surgical techniques are commonly used to administer compounds that do not cross the blood brain barrier. Other applications include neuroelectrical stimulation and pathological insults.

  High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
The HPLC is a method of compound analysis used for separation and identification of chemicals. Purification and identification of substrates are also functions of liquid chromatography.

  Pharmacology
Drug preparation and admistration protocol are frequently utilized in the lab. Recently tested compounds include Modafinil® and Ginko biloba.
