The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Art and Design will display the works of graduating seniors in the department’s final exhibit of the semester with an opening reception Nov. 29 from 5-7 p.m. at the Southern Miss Museum of Art. The exhibit runs through Dec. 16 and features the artistry of 12 of the department’s students.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Main Street United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg for Dr. Don George, University of Southern Mississippi Professor Emeritus of Speech Communication, who died at Regency Hospital in Hattiesburg Nov. 3. He was 98.

Michael Sims, a University of Southern Mississippi sophomore polymer science major from Hattiesburg, makes a point during a debate about the Occupy Wall Street movement. The event was held Thursday on the school’s Hattiesburg campus and sponsored by the Southern Miss Debate Society, which is open to all students at the university regardless of their major.

A group of University of Southern Mississippi students studying political science and journalism took part in an interactive program hosted by C-SPAN on its ‘Road to the White House 2012” tour bus, which visited the Hattiesburg campus on Thursday, Nov. 3.

 

Senior political science major Katie Wilson of Biloxi, Miss.; broadcast journalism major Rachel Beech of Brandon, Miss.; and Justin Mitchell of Bay St. Louis, Miss. took the opportunity to ask questions in a live broadcast of C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” program to guest Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.).

University of Southern Mississippi senior Tateka Whitfield began crafting homemade key chains for fun during her high school days in Crystal Springs, Miss.

 

Today Whitfield is trying to turn a profit with her multi-colored trinkets as part of a class project in Dr. SherRhonda Gibbs’ Introduction to Entrepreneurship course. On Thursday, Nov. 3, Whitfield’s team joined five other groups from Gibbs’ class to hawk their wares at Joseph Greene Hall during a Student Venture Fair.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Katrina Research Center will host New York artist Terence Netter’s exhibit, “The 9/11 Series.” The exhibit will be on display on the third floor of the Gulf Coast Library at the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
