The current issue of the Southern Quarterly, titled "African American Identities," celebrates Black History Month. Edited by University of Southern Mississippi Distinguished Professor of English Philip Kolin, it contains scholarly essays on black literature, art, music as well as original poetry by four distinguished black authors plus a bibliography on black architects.

The College of Arts and Letters at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host this month’s session of the Spring Poetry Reading Series featuring Dr. Casey Maugh on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. in room 204 of the Gulf Park campus library in Long Beach.

Tuesday’s much anticipated “Dancing with the Deans” event at a packed Thad Cochran Center Ballroom on the University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus treated its audience to a mix of Fred Astaire-style agility and a few disco-inspired flashbacks.

Featuring Southern Miss administrators and their dance partners, the event was held in conjunction with the formal kickoff of the university’s 2012 Campaign for Southern Miss.

Officers with The University of Southern Mississippi Police Department will teach a self-defense class Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. – noon in the Hall of Honors, located on the second floor of the R.C. Cook University Union.
