Dr. Mary Graham, president of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC), will serve as the spring 2012 commencement speaker for The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.

Two years after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, The University of Southern Mississippi Center for Oral History continues its work capturing the stories of those whose livelihood depends on the Gulf Coast’s seafood industry, which was threatened by the ecological disaster.

 

With the support of a grant from the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Center has talked with crabbers, shrimpers and oyster harvesters across the Gulf of Mexico about the challenges the disaster has presented to their way of life and the foodways of the region.

The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) approved a proposal to restore the School of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi to college status during its monthly meeting today in Jackson.
