LONG BEACH, Miss. – The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will be closed all day Tuesday, August 28, and all day Wednesday, August 29. Tuesday and Wednesday classes will not meet due to the anticipated effects of Tropical Storm Isaac.

Six years ago, Mississippi schools were given a mandate to provide healthy living initiatives to thousands of students statewide. And now, a recent study shows that message may be getting through to the state’s youngest students.

 

Since 2003, Dr. Jerome Kolbo, with the University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Health, and a team of researchers have looked at obesity rates among students in Mississippi. For the first time ever, obesity rates are declining for elementary-aged students.

Does a school board’s management style play a significant role in student academic achievement?

 

That’s the question University of Southern Mississippi educational leadership professor Dr. David Lee and some of his graduate students hope to answer through a research project examining correlations between high and low-achieving school districts and the behavior, decisions and personalities of the boards that govern them.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Hattiesburg for Dr. Dana Ragsdale, professor emeritus in The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music, who died Aug. 1 at her residence. She was 66.

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi is currently enrolling for an after-school program to serve young struggling readers.

 

The Language Enhancement and Achievement Program (LEAP) is designed for students ages 5 through 10 with challenges in reading, spelling and written language, who may or may not have a diagnosis of dyslexia.

Dr. Noel Polk, a University of Southern Mississippi professor emeritus of English and international expert on the work of Nobel Prize-winning Mississippi author William Faulkner, died Tuesday in Jackson, Miss. He was 69.
