The Katrina Research Center at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast is hosting the first stop for the book tour of “Not Meant to Live Like This: Weathering the Storm of Our Lives in New Orleans.” This free event will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. in the Katrina Research Center, located on the third floor of the library on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Students who take their seats in classrooms at The University of Southern Mississippi on Thursday, Sept. 20 will be part of a milestone moment in the institution’s storied history.

 

On that day Southern Miss will mark 100 years since classes first began at what was then known as Mississippi Normal College. Though the college’s legislative founding was established in 1910, regular classes did not commence on the Hattiesburg campus until Sept. 20, 1912.

More students than ever before have entered Mississippi Public Universities, where they will begin building careers in everything from aerospace engineering to urban and regional planning. Across Mississippi's eight public universities, preliminary fall 2012 enrollment figures show an increase of 457 students from fall 2011 numbers. System-wide enrollment has increased annually since 1994.

Nearly 500 singers from across the South will come to the University of Southern Mississippi on Sept. 24-25 to get SICC. That's not s - i - c - k, but instead SICC, the Southern Invitational Choral Conference that attracts talented singers from around the globe in an almost cult-like fashion.
