Amy Radican-Wald, a 2002 graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi Master of Public Health program in the Department of Community Health Sciences, was elected as the Mississippi delegate to the American Public Health Association's (APHA) Governing Council by the Mississippi Public Health Association (MPHA) during the association's annual conference in Philadelphia, Miss., last month.

While Mannoni Performing Arts Center undergoes renovation, the University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Dance’s Repertory Dance Company will take it to the streets, presenting dances created and performed at the Hattiesburg Zoo, the Holloway Transfer and Storage Building, Click Boutique, 206 Front, and in the alleys and hidden doorways of downtown Hattiesburg.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Lake Thoreau Environmental Center will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, Oct. 27 with the Rattler Ramble 5K and Runners High Kids Fun Run beginning with check-in at 9 a.m. at the center. The race will start at 10 a.m. and refreshments and music will follow the event at the center.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. in the Thad Cochran Center ballrooms II and III on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus for Virginia Berry, 63, a member of the university’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty who died Monday, Oct. 15 at her home in Hattiesburg. A reception will follow.

The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation in partnership with the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at The University of Southern Mississippi is currently accepting submissions from publishers for the 27th Annual Ezra Jack Keats New Writer and New Illustrator Book Awards (known collectively as the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award). Submissions will be accepted at any time during the year through Dec. 30, 2012.

The Student Government Association at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast is supporting safe trick-or-treating by hosting, “Nightmare on Golden Eagle Street,” Friday, Oct. 26, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
