Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann presented The University of Southern Mississippi with a check for $366,100 on Wednesday, Oct. 3 in the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building on the University’s Hattiesburg campus.

 

“Our colleges and universities are struggling in these lean budget times to educate our children and stay on the cutting edge of higher education,” says Secretary Hosemann. “These funds will support the University’s educational and research mission of the Gulf Coast Research Lab on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”

Dr. Catherine Rand makes her conducting debut with The University of Southern Mississippi’s top wind band, the Wind Ensemble, on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The WUSM Tailgate Concert Series continues on Saturday, Oct. 6th with T Bird and the Breaks performing before Southern Miss hosts Boise State in a nationally televised football contest at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Lights. Camera. Action. That’s just what Southern Miss alumnus Jonathan Brannan heard when he joined the cast of the new Universal Studios motion picture, “Pitch Perfect.”

 

Brannan, a 2012 music education graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, auditioned for and was cast in the film over a year ago. Part of a talent agency based in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, Brannan auditioned for a lot of projects, but the jobs were few and far between.

The Mississippi Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Oct. 4. A three-member panel of the court will convene at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi Student Health Services will host Employee Wellness Days Oct. 11-12, during which time faculty and staff are encouraged to take advantage of their Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) “Healthy You” wellness benefit.  This benefit allows BCBS members to receive free screenings and immunizations based on gender and age.

The national director of AmeriCorps, Bill Basl, will visit with University of Southern Mississippi students working with local youth as mentors and tutors through AmeriCorps at the Boys and Girls Club of Hattiesburg on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. The Boys and Girls Club is located at 5670 U.S. Highway 49.

Dr. Cynthia Easterling, University of Southern Mississippi Senior Associate Provost, has watched a fledgling resource idea for marketing students become a genuine “must-have” across a wider scale with the fifth-edition printing of “Merchandising Mathematics for Retailing.”

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi will host Missing Links in Academics on Nov. 1-2 at the DuBard School. The seminar will benefit second through eighth-grade general and special education teachers, reading specialists and speech-language pathologists. The cost is $250 until Oct. 17. After Oct. 17, the cost will be $275. Lunch and materials are included.
