While the United States continues to rely on foreign countries for oil, there’s a push here at home to find alternative fuel resources.

 

Working diligently toward that end are researchers at The University of Southern Mississippi who are participating in an international research project aimed at turning marine micro-algae into fuel.

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi, along with the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Nascar, U.S. Olympic Committee, Division I College Sports and other professional leagues, gathered in New York recently to show their commitment to strengthening safety and security at America’s venues.

 

Former National Basketball Association star Earvin “Magic” Johnson accepted the role as Honorary Chair of NCS4’s National Certification Development Commission at a time when safety and security in spectator sports, on and off the field, is paramount.

The last two suspects connected with a Nov. 28 fight that occurred near the Walker Science Building on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus were arrested today after turning themselves in to University Police. Neither are students at the university.

Colin Colbourn of Elkhart, Ind., a doctoral student in history at The University of Southern Mississippi, is the recipient of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr. Memorial Dissertation Fellowship.

 

In its mission to foster the study of U.S. and Marine Corps history, the foundation established the $10,000 dissertation fellowship to memorialize the 20th commandant of the Marine Corps.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL), the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR) and Aqua Green LLC are partnering to produce popular recreational fish such as spotted seatrout, red snapper, and cobia for release into Mississippi waters. The group will release hundreds of red snapper fingerlings onto offshore artificial reefs during the week of Dec. 3-7.
