When the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, researchers from The University of Southern Mississippi were among the first to begin documenting and assessing the scope of the nation’s worst oil spill.

 

The University’s renowned expertise in the field of marine science played an integral role in determining the environmental and economic ramifications from the spill on the northern Gulf Coast.

The University of Southern Mississippi is on its way to transforming the quality of health care provided to students, faculty and staff -- thus a longtime vision of Student Health Services Director Dr. Virginia Moffitt Crawford and her family will soon become a reality.

 

On Thursday, March 7, the USM Foundation announced the Moffitt Health Center Campaign, which will aid in the relocation of the University’s Student Health Services to a new, state-of-the-art facility. The $1 million campaign has already received $750,000 in commitments toward the center.

Gov. Phil Bryant today named the Center for Gulf Studies, a research consortium led by The University of Southern Mississippi, as the RESTORE (Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourism Opportunities and Revived Economy) Research Center of Excellence for the state of Mississippi.

Middle and high school students from across the Mississippi Gulf Coast will take part in the 2nd Annual Gulf Coast SeaPerch Challenge, set for Saturday, March 9 at the Biloxi Natatorium.

Dr. Faye Gilbert, who earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in business administration at The University of Southern Mississippi, will return to her alma mater as the next dean of the University’s College of Business. Pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, her official start date will be July 1.

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of History recently hosted the National History Day in Mississippi competition. Approximately 180 junior high and high school students competed in this “history fair” styled event Feb. 23, with 60 Southern Miss faculty and students serving as judges. Following the competition, an awards ceremony was held in Joseph Green Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.
