Dr. Thomas J. Lipscomb, associate dean in the College of Education and Psychology for The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast and professor in the Department of Educational Studies and Research, accepted the 2013 Dean’s Cup presented by the Office of the Academic Dean at Southern Miss Gulf Coast.

Awarded the Dean’s Cup for a second year in a row, the College of Education and Psychology received the award based on overall student grade point average, student retention from the previous year to the current year and the college’s graduation rate. The Speech and Debate team of The University of Southern Mississippi competed at the 100th anniversary tournament and convention of Pi Kappa Delta National Honor Society, March 13-17 on the campus of Webster University in St. Louis. The field of competition included 86 colleges and universities from across the U.S., with seven students representing Southern Miss at the tournament.

The University of Southern Mississippi announces the 2013 Spring Senior Show, hosted by the Department of Art and Design in the College of Arts and Letters. Presented in three different phases and places, it features works by graduating seniors on display now through May.

Charles “Chuck” Kershner, a University of Southern Mississippi alumnus who served as executive editor of the Clinton (N.Y.) Courier, died April 14 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 70.

University of Southern Mississippi students recently won awards in Jackson at the Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters annual contest honoring the best in broadcast journalism in the state for 2012.

The fifth annual “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes,” designed to raise awareness of sexual assault and funds to support the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention, will be held Thursday, April 25 from 6-9 p.m. at the Payne Center Sports Field on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus.

The Mississippi Legislature’s authorization of $20 million in state bonds will help elevate a new nursing building at The University of Southern Mississippi from the planning stage to the construction phase.

 

Southern Miss will receive the funding this year which will expedite plans for the building – to be named Asbury Hall and built on the Hattiesburg campus. The official name has not yet been considered for approval by the State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) Board. Tentative plans call for construction to begin in 2014.
