Author Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie, author of  Karma’s Footsteps, presented a poetry reading Wednesday, April 17 in the Cook Library Art Gallery on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. Tallie's reading was part of National Poetry Month activities art the university. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, a University of Southern Mississippi alumnus, will give the Spring 2013 Commencement address Friday, May 10 in two ceremonies at Reed Green Coliseum on the Hattiesburg campus.

The LSU Police Department, in conjunction with the LSU Athletic Department, received the Sport Event Security Aware, or SESA, certification from the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Southern Mississippi will host a viewing event Saturday, April 20 from 8 - 9:30 p.m. on the Hattiesburg campus in conjunction with national Astronomy Day. This free event will be held adjacent to the intramural fields and the public is invited.

The Big Event, an annual day of community service at The University of Southern Mississippi, was recently honored with a Keep Hattiesburg Beautiful award during a Hattiesburg City Council meeting held April 16. Students from Bay, Long Beach and Biloxi High Schools took part in the annual Day at Southern Miss event April 12, hosted by the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast. Day at Southern Miss, which caters to junior and sophomore female high school students, was created as a way for girls to learn more about the university and future career options. The students took part in sample class lectures, a tour of the Gulf Park campus and lunch with various Southern Miss faculty and administrators. A free seminar by a renowned scientist in the field of metagenomics is set for 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 22, in the Caylor Auditorium at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. The presentation will be the fifth in the Grimes Distinguished Lecturer Series.

Dr. Stuart Rowan, a professor of macromolecular science and engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio will give the 11th annual Bayer Distinguished Lecture Thursday, April 25 at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The lecture series is sponsored by Bayer MaterialScience and hosted by the Southern Miss School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.
