Mississippi’s leading broadcasters from across the state will meet with and mentor students for the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters (MAB) Day Thursday, April 18 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

This week, the Gulf Coast Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi will join libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, which recognizes a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

The University of Southern Mississippi announced today a comprehensive landscaping plan to restore the southern edge of the University’s Hattiesburg campus that was heavily damaged by an EF-4 tornado on February 10. The USM Foundation also announced a campus beautification campaign to generate private funds to help address the cost of the plan.

 

The landscape of the campus was drastically altered by the tornado with the loss of 75 trees and debris scattered across the front of the campus.

Jon Scieszka sees himself simply as an author supplying the material needed by teachers and librarians "who go to work everyday” to inspire their students and other young people to read.

"My job's easy," Scieszka said. "I just sit in my office and write, but they're the ones in the trenches motivating kids to want to be readers."

Scieszka is the author of the acclaimed The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. He was on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus this week to receive the top honor given at the annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival, the Southern Miss Medallion.

Community health science students at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast reached out to the university community by hosting the health fair, “Are Your Loved Ones in the Zone?,” during National Public Health Week April 1-7.

Nancy Duarte spent just one year as a student at The University of Southern Mississippi, but that brief foray into higher education played a significant role in shaping the successful businesswoman she has become today.

 

On Thursday, April 11 the university’s College of Business acknowledged Duarte’s impressive success story with the annual Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year Award during a ceremony held on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Miss.

Just over two months ago, the Hattiesburg area was devastated by a deadly F-4 tornado. The School of Music at Southern Miss faced considerable losses but experienced an overwhelming outpouring from the community and the world.
