The University of Southern Mississippi is celebrating National Poetry Month by hosting a workshop and poetry readings on the Hattiesburg campus.

For the final film screening in the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Film Department will present a free screening and filmmakers discussion of the film “Strong!” Friday, April 26 at 6:45 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie, a renowned writer, educator and performer will present a poetry workshop and reading Wednesday, April 17 on the Hattiesburg campus. Her programs will be free and open to the public and presented by the Southern Miss Center for Black Studies in celebration of Poetry Month.

University of Southern Mississippi doctoral candidate Tina McDyess hopes to build a strong foundation in molecular genetics as a participant in the National Institute of Nursing Research Summer Genetics Institute June 3-28 at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

Kelly Liles is turning fashion despair into hope.

Liles, a University of Southern Mississippi freshman biological sciences major, started “Dresses of Hope” in the summer of 2010. The nonprofit organization provides formal attire to young women in financial need.

University of Southern Mississippi students Michael Sims of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Hannah Roberts of Mount Olive, Miss., have been awarded prestigious Goldwater Scholarships which recognize the nation’s next generation of top research scientists.

 

Sims is a junior majoring in polymer science and chemistry, while Roberts is a sophomore chemistry major. Southern Miss accounts for two of the four Goldwater Scholarships awarded this year to students in Mississippi.

The Center for Child Development at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg will host Family Fun Day Sunday, April 14 from 1-5 p.m. in celebration of National Week of the Young Child. Admission is $5 for children and free for adults with proceeds to benefit the Center's playground.

The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection Book Group at The University of Southern Mississippi will meet Thursday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m. to discuss Marcus Zusak’s The Book Thief in recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Month. The meeting will be held in the de Grummond Exhibit Room on the second floor of Cook Library, located between the library administration office and the School of Library and Information Science.

The Division of Student Affairs at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg will host a reception Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. in the president’s conference room in the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building for students recipients of scholarships funded through the annual Southern Miss-Comcast Golf Classic.
