Polymer research at The University of Southern Mississippi is once again the subject of national media interest. Dr. Sarah Morgan, associate professor of polymer science at the university, was recently interviewed on the Hattiesburg campus by Stephen Anderson of NBC Learn, a division of NBC Universal. Inc. Morgan was asked about the use of low-friction polymers in the making of suits used by competitors in Olympic events that depend on speed for success in competition. NBC Learn is the educational arm of NBC News dedicated to providing resources for students, teachers and lifelong learners.

One recent graduate and another current student at The University of Southern Mississippi helped organize an important one-day gathering of 13 federal, state and local agencies to discuss the criteria necessary for the Port of Gulfport to become designated a “strategic port” by the Defense Department.

A mighty restoration project is underway at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Ogletree House, left severely damaged by a tornado that struck the Hattiesburg campus on Feb. 10.

 

After more than six months of relocation to an off-campus site, the Alumni Association is poised to resume operations at the Ogletree House in the coming weeks. The 13-person staff will occupy space toward the north annex of the building added to the historic structure during a restoration and expansion project completed in 2009.

University Libraries at the University of Southern Mississippi will sponsor the first of five talks relating to the American Civil War on Tuesday, Sept. 3 from 6-7 p.m. at the Cook Library Art Gallery on the Hattiesburg campus. The lecture series is free and open to the public.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s African American Student Organization (AASO) will hold its first reunion August 30 – Sept. 1 in Hattiesburg with a variety of events designed to reconnect former students who were members of the organization.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony today to celebrate the opening of Elizabeth Hall, the final of five building projects that was completed following the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Southern Miss administrators, faculty, staff, students, and community leaders took part in the ceremony to celebrate the building’s reopening.
