In order to facilitate a smooth transition for new and returning students at The University of Southern Mississippi, the University Police Department will be blocking lots, closing streets, and directing traffic on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17. Hattiesburg motorists should be aware of congestion on West Fourth Street as residents return to Century Park.

The Katrina Research Center (KRC) at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus has been awarded a grant to mark the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s March on Washington. Through the grant, the KRC will provide scholarly presentations and exhibit four documentaries with riveting new footage illustrating the history of civil rights in America.

University of Southern Mississippi officials are pleased with efforts to rebound from an EF-4 tornado that damaged buildings and landscaping on its Hattiesburg campus six months ago.

 

The storm roared through the Pine Belt Feb. 10 and struck the south side and main entrance of the university. Approximately 75 trees were destroyed and the front of the historic Ogletree House was severely damaged, along with some of the university’s fine arts facilities.

The completion of five major building projects on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach signifies the return of the beachfront campus since damage sustained from Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.

 

“We are delighted to announce that we have fully returned to the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus following the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina,” said Dr. Frances Lucas, Southern Miss Gulf Coast vice president and campus executive officer. “We worked hard to restore the original beauty of this campus, and update the classrooms for more stimulating student engagement."

The Gulf Coast Library at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach will exhibit the work of local wood turner, Breck Whitworth, throughout August and September.

Dr. Tulio Sulbaran, director of the Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation at The University of Southern Mississippi, served as one of the key presenters during the Naval Air Systems Command's International Transportation Compliance and Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) meeting held July 30-31 at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.
