The Friends of University Libraries in conjunction with the Favre 4 Hope Foundation, Salvation Army, and Red Door Marketing Agency are working to improve the Christmas season for Pine Belt and Mississippi Gulf Coast children by launching the third annual Give a Child a New Book Day campaign.

The Live Oak Writing Project at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus was awarded a grant of $87,000 in a partnership with the Mississippi Department of Education. The partnership requires a three-year initiative to offer a 10-session professional development program for teachers as they implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts.

Students from The University of Southern Mississippi continue to shine in national debate competitions, most recently in San Jacinto College North in Houston, Texas. The Southern Miss Forensics Society competed in a field of competition included 19 colleges and universities from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s trumpet professor, Jason Bergman, is pleased to announce the release of his new CD, On the Horizon: New Music for Trumpet and Piano. The CD features Bergman and William Campbell on trumpet and Ellen Elder on piano.

The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) will hold a free fair housing workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. at the Natchez Senior Citizen Multipurpose Center at 800 Washington Str., in Natchez, Miss.

The 14th annual McNair Scholars Research Symposium will be held Thursday, Oct. 31 from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, room 216. Students from a variety of disciplines will be presenting their research on each hour and half hour. Students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to attend.

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre will continue its Fall 2013 season with A Bright Room Called Day when it opens on Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. All performances will take place in the Hartwig Theatre of the Theatre and Dance Building at Southern Miss. Performances continue on November 1, 2, 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will take place Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. General admission is $8.
