The Kawai Corporation of America has named The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music to its roster of Elite Performing Instrument Collection (EPIC) schools. In a presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 29, officials from the Kawai Corporation presented Southern Miss President Rodney D. Bennett and Dr. Michael Miles, director of the School of Music, a plaque commemorating the announcement.

More than 120 players and 50 sponsors participated in the 15th Annual Shell Finish Line/Southern Miss Alumni Association Homecoming Scholarship Golf Tournament, hosted Oct. 25, by the Hattiesburg Country Club, the official country club of the Alumni Association.

With a gift-in-kind of $262,000 to The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation, Southern Miss alumnus Mike Mason is helping beautify the Hattiesburg campus while reducing water consumption.

 

Mason was born with Southern Miss spirit in his DNA, which is to be expected considering he grew up in a house that backed up to the University president’s backyard. After leaving Southern Miss, Mason ventured on a career path that led him to Texas. In 1993, he became president and chief executive officer of Weathermatic, a small manufacturer of irrigation components in Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.

David McRaney, a 2007 University of Southern Mississippi graduate and current Director of New Media at WDAM-TV, will sign copies of his latest book, “You Are Now Less Dumb,” at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Barnes & Noble on the Southern Miss campus.
