The School of Mass Communication and Journalism at The University of Southern Mississippi was officially welcomed into its new home during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Friday, Oct. 25 at renovated College Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi alumnus Chuck Scianna gazed upon the massive golden eagle sculpture he commissioned for the Hattiesburg campus and acknowledged that artist/sculptor David Anderson had met the No. 1 criteria.

 

“All I told David was that I wanted to be wowed,” said Scianna. “And he has wowed me alright, with an exclamation point.”

 

On Thursday, Oct. 24, Scianna and his wife, Rita, joined Southern Miss officials, alumni and friends for the dedications of two golden eagle sculptures – on the Hattiesburg campus and Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Named “Lofty Return,” the sculptures symbolically tie the campuses together while welcoming graduates back to their alma mater.

With more than four decades of experience in the business, veteran broadcast journalist and University of Southern Mississippi graduate Chuck Scarborough says the compelling stories about the everyday triumphs and tragedies that shape the news still motivate him.

“It’s just an exciting profession if you pay attention and are engaged in the world,” said Scarborough, an Emmy winner and longtime news anchor for WNBC-TV in New York. “Why wouldn’t you want to keep your hand in it?”

The Gulf Coast Center for Child Development at The University of Southern Mississippi celebrated its grand opening Oct. 24 in Pass Christian. The center hosted the ceremony to commemorate its new partnership with the community and the Pass Christian School District.

At The University of Southern Mississippi football is a big deal. M.M. Roberts Stadium on the Hattiesburg campus is nicknamed “The Rock” and SMTTT (Southern Miss To The Top) can be found on car tags and bumper stickers throughout the state of Mississippi.

The Mississippi Polymer Institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the WIINTECH group, which signifies the first official step in moving local Mississippi businesses toward international collaboration with the companies that are a part of that network.

A celebration of student writing is currently on display in Cook Library Gallery on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. Coinciding with the National Day on Writing, which was celebrated nationwide on Oct. 21, Eagles Write! showcases student works and recognizes them as authors.
