A new and creative learning space, known as the Student Think Center, opened earlier this month for students and faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

 

The Think Center, whose goal is to help students understand their learning personality, offers instructional support for faculty, active and experimental environments for collaborative or individual learning, and various student development activities.

Armed Forces veterans seeking information about enrollment options or assistance with degree programs at The University of Southern Mississippi are encouraged to consult a new website offered by the Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families.

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum recently obtained the V Corps (Fifth Corps) Army footballchampionship trophy from 1941. The trophy was won by the 38th Division "Cycloners" soldier football team, which competed at the football stadium ("The Rock") on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The team was undefeated against other soldier football teams from training camps in the Southeastern United States. All of the dates, opponents and scores are engraved on the trophy.

Nearly 50 years after the tragic death of America’s 35th president, John F. Kennedy’s legacy is still felt in the areas of mass media, public policy and culture, say faculty members at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) is in the process of releasing more than 20,000 Phase II Gulf Race striped bass fingerlings into the major tributaries of coastal Mississippi including the Pearl, Jordan, Biloxi, Tchoutacabouffa, Ft. Bayou and East and West Pascagoula.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) at The University of Southern Mississippi are sponsoring a variety of canned food collection drives Nov. 18 -23 as part of “Let’s SAAC Hunger” week.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music will present a pair of lively band performances in consecutive weeks this month.

 

On Monday, Nov. 18 the Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Dr. Mohamad Schuman, will take the stage at Bennett Auditorium. One week later, Dr. Catherine Rand takes the Bennett podium to lead the Wind Ensemble. Both events are set to begin at 8 p.m. and are free to the public.

Dr. Royal Walker, executive director of the Institute for Disability Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been invited to participate in a ceremony marking the 50th Anniversary of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act set for Friday, Nov. 15 at the White House.

 

The event will be held from Noon-3:30 CST in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building of the White House and feature senior Administration officials, special guests and a series of panel discussions about the past, present and future for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
