Segments of The University of Southern Mississippi's Holiday Choral Spectacular will air on area television stations over the next week. Taped during live performances at Main Street Baptist Church in Hattiesburg earlier this month, the program features the outstanding Southern Miss choral programs and symphony orchestra and area high school choirs in a musical evening hosted by Dr. Rodney Bennett.

Dr. Mark Miller, professor in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Geography and Geology, has been selected as the recipient of the Mississippi World Trade Center’s (MSWTC) 2013 “Excellence in International Education Award.” Miller received the award at the MSWTC annual meeting in Jackson, Miss.

The Mississippi Polymer Institute (MPI) will enter a transition phase at the conclusion of this year with the departure of Director Dr. Bryan Brister, who has accepted a position as chief operating officer with Voltea, an international water purification company. MPI Operations Leader Robert Thompson will assume the role of interim director.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach chartered two new student organizations during the fall semester. The Alliance for Equality and Student Veteran’s Association were both approved by the Student Organizations Council to serve as organizations for Southern Miss Gulf Coast students.

"Give a Child a New Book Day" has announced the initiative received 4,000 donated books for 2013, an increase of 330 books from 2012’s donation collection total. This means every child in the Hattiesburg area served by the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program will receive a brand new book for Christmas.

Emily Matthews, a second-year graduate student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi, captured second place for Best Student Leader Award at the National Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization Conference held last month in Chicago, Ill.

The American Heart Association celebrated their 2013 Heart Walk t-shirt contest winners, top fundraisers and top sponsors on Friday during a luncheon at the Four Points Sheraton in Biloxi. Among those recognized were Dr. Frances Lucas, University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast vice president and campus executive officer, and Shanna Bordelon, secretary for the university’s Gulf Coast College of Education and Psychology.

Dr. Heather Pearson and Dr. Giselle Marks, both graduates of The University of Southern Mississippi doctoral program, took home significant awards from the New York Cosmetic Technology Transfer Conference held last month in Iselin, N.J.
