The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Black Studies, in collaboration with the city of Hattiesburg, Hattiesburg Historic Downtown Association and the Hattiesburg Convention Commission will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Summer, when more than 1000 volunteers came to Mississippi from across the nation in 1964 to launch an unprecedented voter registration drive for African Americans.

With the required time period expired for filing new petitions to the United States Supreme Court, the Mississippi Supreme Court’s favorable ruling toward The University of Southern Mississippi in three cases involving former coaches with the women’s soccer program will stand.

Dr. Denis Wiesenburg, Provost at The University of Southern Mississippi, has announced that Dr. Daniel Norton will join the University as Associate Provost for International Programs, beginning March 1, 2014. He takes over for Dr. Rafael Sánchez-Alonso, who has served in an interim capacity.

Jerry Holt, a 1983 graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi’s photojournalism program and longtime member of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune photo staff, recently reflected on his coverage of the election of Nelson Mandela as president of South Africa.

Holt was part of a news team the Star-Tribune sent to South Africa to cover the historic event, in which non-whites were allowed for the first time to vote in a presidential election. Mandela, who died Dec. 5, is the icon of the country’s anti-apartheid movement and was imprisoned for 27 years on charges of attempting to overthrow the government.

M.K. Turk, the winningest men’s basketball coach in the history of Southern Miss, passed away Friday morning. He was 71.

 

Turk spent 20 seasons as the head basketball coach at The University of Southern Mississippi and finished his career as the all-time winningest coach in school history with 301 Golden Eagle victories, one NIT championship, two NCAA appearances and six NIT appearances.

Eric Duckworth’s love for the New Orleans Saints did not prevent The University of Southern Mississippi business student from serving an internship with the NFL team’s division rival.

 

Duckworth, a senior business management major, spent the first quarter of this year working as an unpaid intern with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization in Tampa, Fla. He considers the unique experience “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I was very blessed to receive.”
