Josh Duplantis, director of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE), will be the guest speaker at the next meeting/luncheon of the Don’t Mention Age (DMA) club. The meeting will be held Saturday, March 1 at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church Student Center in Hattiesburg.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host a special roundtable discussion titled, “From the Flatlands to the Coast: Bringing the Mississippi Delta to the Mississippi Gulf Coast” on Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The fourth annual Educators Connect conference, formerly LEC Connects, will offer sessions highlighting resources for innovative teaching strategies. This year’s conference will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Thad Cochran Center on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

The event is free and open to educators at universities, colleges, community colleges and K-12 professionals, as well as graduate and undergraduate students.

Joshua Fortenberry, an assistant district attorney in the 12th Circuit Court District of Mississippi, will present “Driving Under the Influence in Mississippi: Law and Consequence,” Tuesday, Feb. 25 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Honor House on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney D. Bennett extended a personal thank-you via Skype today (Feb. 21) to sixth-grade students in California for their contributions to the Oseola McCarty Scholarship Fund.

 

Bennett spoke with members of the class at Alice G. Mulcahy Middle School in Tulare, Calif., and their teacher, Matt Johnson, who introduced the students to McCarty’s story recently as part of a discussion about philanthropy. McCarty, a Hattiesburg, Miss., washerwoman, left the vast majority of her life savings to The University of Southern Mississippi for the establishment of a perpetual scholarship

Executive officers for the Student Government Association at The University of Southern Mississippi were chosen during an election held on the Hattiesburg campus Feb. 18.

An inauguration ceremony for the new officers will be held March 27 at 3 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium during the university’s Founders’ Day activities.

New works are being exhibited by the Gulf Coast Library at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The first new exhibit on display features the works of coast artist, Olivia Simon. In celebration of Black History Month, the second exhibit on display features selections from the private collection of Edward G. McCormack, associate dean and professor for Southern Miss Libraries.

A recent article about the racial history of the American Beard written for the magazine, “The Atlantic,” featured references to the book, “Knights of the Razor: Black Barbers in Slavery and Freedom,” by Dr. Douglas Bristol, associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus.
