Brady Leatherwood, a senior social work major at The University of Southern Mississippi, is helping nursing home residents with dementia find joy and re-discover their memories.

Leatherwood and her adviser Karen Aderer, an instructor in the School of Social Work, make weekly visits to residents at the Driftwood Nursing Center in Gulfport, Miss. During the visits they apply individualized music intervention ideally 30 minutes before sundowning, the most agitated period for a person with dementia.

After Kyla Jacobs graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in May 2013, she started a career in the non-profit sector where she could use the knowledge learned from her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. Although she had a love for non-profit organizations, only six months later, a unique opportunity became available which combined a variety of career interests Jacobs enjoys.

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre will kick off its spring 2014 season with its presentation of Clybourne Park. All performances will take place in the Tatum Theatre of the Theatre and Dance Building at Southern Miss. Performances are Feb. 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28 and March 1 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will be held Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.

The Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) at The University of Southern Mississippi with the leadership of Michigan Technology University and Ocean Springs Upper Elementary is hosting the first Family Transportation Activity Night from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Ocean Springs Upper Elementary School.
