The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Dance will host Dancing Against Substance Abuse Monday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. The dance event, choreographed by Performance and Choreography student Alexis Barbaresi, will be held in the Thad Cochran Grand Ballroom.

The University of Southern Mississippi Forensics Society will host a high school tournament for debate teams hoping to qualify for the Grand National Speech and Debate Tournament of the National Catholic Forensics League. The Biloxi Catholic Forensics League Tournament will be held Feb. 21-22 at Joseph Green Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. This event is free and open to the public.

In an effort to help University of Southern Mississippi international students with transportation to the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Southern Miss Gulf Coast Vice President and Campus Executive Officer, Dr. Frances Lucas, fourth from left, initiated the new International Student Bike Loan Program. The university purchased 15 bicycles on loan to international students for the semester. Students, selected by raffle, will have the opportunity to borrow a university bicycle at the start of each academic semester.

The Center for Undergraduate Research is holding two sessions of a workshop covering preparation and submission of proposals for competition in the Eagle Scholars Program for Undergraduate Research (Eagle SPUR), in which undergraduate students may receive up to $1,000 to support independent research conducted with a faculty mentor.

Dr. Doug Masterson in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will present the workshops on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. Both will be held in The Speaking Center in Cook Library on the Hattiesburg campus and will be simulcast to Southern Miss Gulf Coast.

Student Health Services at The University of Southern Mississippi has achieved continuing accreditation through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Accreditation distinguishes Student Health Services from many other outpatient facilities by providing the highest quality of care to its patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.

A live oak tree that did not survive replanting last spring at The University of Southern Mississippi was replaced today (Feb. 10) by another mature live oak. Last May five live oaks were transported from a grower in Florida and replanted on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus as part of a major landscaping restoration project. The remaining four are alive and thriving today. More than 75 trees were lost when an EF-4 tornado struck the campus on Feb. 10, 2013. (Photos by Kelly Dunn)

Dr. Brian Gearity, assistant professor of sport coaching education at The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Human Performance and Recreation, served as guest editor for the just released edition of the Strength and Conditioning Journal.

On Monday, Feb. 10, The University of Southern Mississippi marked a year since a destructive EF-4 tornado struck its Hattiesburg campus, damaging buildings and destroying trees, primarily at its front entrance next to Hardy Street.

University officials are pleased with progress to restore the campus and look forward to completing all work connected with recovery from the storm by the end of 2014.
