Southern Miss Today, WUSM’s daily news and public affairs show, took home a first-place award for Best Community News Coverage at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s annual awards ceremony held March 8 in New York.

A team of computer science students from The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus placed third at the 2014 Deloitte Consulting’s Hattiesburg Invitational Programming Competition in February. The team competed against 19 other teams from universities throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Stephanie McCracken, a junior at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has moved a significant step closer to becoming the school’s fourth winner of the prestigious Truman Scholarship.

 

McCracken, who is majoring in geography/geographic information systems, recently learned that she had been named a Truman Finalist – joining more than 200 students from across the country vying for the coveted prize. She is Mississippi’s only Truman Finalist selection.

William Landrum of Hattiesburg is earning his stripes as a soldier in the Mississippi Army National Guard and cadet in The University of Southern Mississippi’s U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC).

A sophomore criminal justice major at Southern Miss, Landrum was recently named the State Guard’s Soldier of the Year after besting fellow soldiers in a series of exercises, both physical and mental, to earn the title. The achievement earned him the right to move on to regional competition.
